BARC STARZ 9-10-08

September 11, 2008

Dear faithful BARC STARZ readers,

Thanks for coming through for us AGAIN!  We are narrowing down the 90 day dog list for the month…and its all because of you!   If you are keeping score from last week, Zoe and Velvet were adopted, and Deputy, Lolly Pop, Ruby, Goose and Beethoven are in foster homes!  If you are interested in adopting one of those dogs from last week (pictures are attached) please emamil kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net and she can get you in touch with the foster mom or dad.   We still have 4 dogs left we need to place by the end of the month:  Alex, JoJo, Rusty and Stripe.  Can you help one of them??    Email us today if you can!  We are running out of time!  There also are some adorable foster puppies ready for adoption this month….take a look!

Alex is a true gentleman. He is a two year old Lab mix with the most unusual coat…he glistens bronze in the sunlight.  Alex is a very smart boy, he really listens and will look at you trying to understand what you are saying. He will talk to you too. Alex is great with other dogs. He has been at BARC since April. He came in with tags and with his buddy, when his owners were called they said they would come and get him so Alex sat for days waiting and they never came. When they were called again they said they were traveling to a wedding and didn’t have time to come for him. Alex was adopted briefly in August and returned; the adopters wrote that he is a great dog and just wonderful with kids. They returned him because they were keeping him in the back yardL and he could jump their 4 foot fence. Alex wants to be part of a family. He is so sweet it is just heartbreaking to see him look at you through the bars of his kennel with those soulful eyes just saying are you coming for me?

Contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com if you can help.

Sadly, JoJo was adopted as a little pup and returned to the shelter when he got big (as if we don’t all grow up!)   Jo Jo is an adorable, spunky, happy fellow. He is approximately 10 months old Lab mix. He is approximately 35lbs, not too big, not too small.  Since his return Jo Jo has spent nearly 3 months at BARC. Jo Jo loves to run and play with other dogs. He is a cuddler and a does the “Jo Jo lean” when you pet him. He is a bright, attentive, intelligent guy. He has spent most of his short life at BARC after being dumped by his family. He LOVES the water…he sticks his whole head in the water bucket. He loves to play ball and he loves to play with other dogs. He would love to go jogging or power walking. He has a lot of personality. He is sweetheart who just wants a family who will play with him.  His time is up on Sept. 27th.  Contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com

RUSTY (A892256) is your All American Dog. He’s the kind of dog who will be waiting for you anxiously when you get home, falling all over himself with joy every time. Rusty’s kind of a medium-to-large dog who’s full grown at just over a year old. He loves to play and is very clownish so he’d probably be great with kids or as a buddy for another dog with his energy level. Come on, how can you resist that face?  He only has 3 more weeks left at the shelter.   Please come meet him and fall in love!  Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com

STRIPE (A892354) is barely six months old and doesn’t know all the great puppy stuff he’s been missing. He was so excited to go outside and play with all the cool toys and follow the big dogs around. There is so much for Stripe to see and do! Stripe is listed as a Lab mix so he will probably be a medium-to-large size dog when fully grown. He’s all black with white toes and a neat stripe down his belly. This playful puppy is already neutered and ready to get out and see what he’s been missing!  Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more info about Stripe!

Every volunteer has a dog they think is special and Elizabeth feels that way about Chelsea. This poor girl was dumped at the pound by her owner and is so depressed and scared. Her age is estimated at seven. Can you imagine your owner getting rid of you after all those good years? Chelsea is heartworm negative and has had all her shots. She’s a very gentle and quiet dog who will rest her head against you in a way that really touches your heart. Older dogs don’t usually get a chance at BARC so if you can foster this sweet girl and give her back her confidence please email Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com.

Hi my name is “Little Man” !!  I am a 4 month old German Sheperd male who loves to give kisses and I am totally a lap dog, even though I’ve outgrown my foster’s lap!  I have plenty of room “to grow” as you can see by my ears and my huge feet and I love to throw bones in the air and play catch.  I’ve had all my shots & I’ve been neutered and microchipped. I get along well with kids, other dogs and even cats………just waiting for that perfect family to take me home!  Contact Judy at jjsjewels@sbcglobal.net

Tabitha is a black and white 3 month old border collie mix. She is very playful and loves the water. Tabitha will make a great companion for an active owner. She will probably be about 50lbs full grown.  Contact Fran at franfoyle67@comcast.net if you are interested!

Timmy is a black 3 month old lab mix. He is cuddly and playful and loves to sit in your lap. This sweet natured boy will make someone a great buddy. He will probably be about 50lbs full grown.  Contact Fran at franfoyle67@comcast.net if you are interested!

Meet Marshal and Dillon!  These little guys are adorable 3 month old lab mixes that just have more love to give than you can imagine!  They are well behaved young cowboys that are crate trained and good with other dogs and cats.  They adore a challenge and just really want to be held and loved on.  They had a rough start to life, but are living the high life right now and are now ready for their forever homes!  If you want to know more about these guys, please email their foster mom at elimedwick@yahoo.com

The adoption fee is only $55 for any of these dogs and includes:   surgery for spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, Home Again Microchip and 1 year city license.  What a deal for a lifelong friend!!

BARC STARZ 9-3-08

September 8, 2008

Dear BARC STARZ Readers,

Thank you so much for your amazing response from last week!  We are excited to report that Bella was saved by our friends at Scouts Honor Rescue!  Thank you!  Mandy was adopted and is sleeping happily in her new home.  Haven is also safe and sound in a great foster home.   J  However…there are 3 dogs left from last week along with some new “last chance dogs.”  2 of these are very  URGENT!  Please keep reading!

We can’t believe we did not have any responses about VELVET (A892273) who was featured last week!   We are telling you, this is a gem of a dog!    There are so many black dogs at BARC it’s easy for them to get overlooked. Please don’t let that happen to this wonderful dog! Velvet is unusual in that he has a very lean build with glossy fur that really shows off his muscles. He has a very regal disposition but any time he gets close to you he will drop and beg you to rub his belly! Velvet is shy and quiet, good with other dogs, and one of the most easy-going and gentle guys currently at BARC. Come see Velvet in person and see how he got his name. The pictures don’t do him justice.   If you can help Velvet, contact Kathy at keffebach@sbcglobal.net.

This week we have an URGENT plea for DEPUTY (A889963)!!    He has been at BARC since MAY and his time is up this week!!  He needs a foster or adoptive home by Sunday, Sept. 6th.  Deputy is a gentle giant who’s listed as a German Shepherd mix but has more of that hound dog look going for him. At just about a year old, Deputy’s still got some playful puppy energy. He is fine with other dogs, good on a leash and may be housebroken, too. This big guy is neutered and ready to go. All he needs is somebody who loves big dogs to give him a chance.  Please, can you save Deputy???   Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net if you can help.

Our 2nd UPRGENT needs dog is ZOE (A890357).   Her time is also up this week!  Zoe needs an adopter or foster by Sunday, Sept. 6th!   Poor Zoe is a little energy ball who just can’t be cooped up in the kennel any longer.  She is just a sweet goof of a dog!  She’s listed as a Beagle mix but she looks more heavy on the mix side. Zoe also loves to play and be silly. She has a funny bounce to her run when she chases tennis balls. Zoe is also about a year old, medium-to-large size, spayed and ready to go. Zoe will love a big yard and plenty of exercise. She’ll give you lots of sloppy dog kisses in return!   Please help save Miss Zoe!  She’ll love you forever.  Contact Elizabeth if you can help at evitek@yahoo.com.

2nd plea for Lolly Pop A865751!!!!  She is a beautiful female German Shepherd mix about 2 years old.  She’s on the small side for a shepherd mix (about 45 lbs.) and as sweet as she can be.  These pictures don’t do her justice…she really is a beautiful dog!  Her time is up on Sept. 17th.  Lolly Pop has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.  If you are interested, contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

2nd plea also for JoJo!!! Sadly, JoJo was adopted as a little pup and returned to the shelter when he got big (as if we don’t all grow up!)  He is located in South B37.  Jo Jo is an adorable, spunky, happy fellow.

RUBY (A892258) is also a big girl but is very laid back. Ruby’s listed as a Lab mix but she has beautiful red and brown brindle striping. At just over a year old she acts more settled like an older dog. She likes to play, though, and is fine with other dogs, but she’d rather snuggle up next to you for some hugs and kisses. Ruby is a very gentle and sweet girl looking for someone who can appreciate a really big lap dog.  Ruby only had 3 more weeks left at the shelter!   Adopt her today!!!  Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net

Sadly, we have two puppies who have been at BARC for almost 90 days. Can you imagine spending your best time as a baby living in a cage at the pound watching all the other puppies get adopted but you?  STRIPE (A892354) is barely six months old and doesn’t know all the great puppy stuff he’s been missing. He was so excited to go outside and play with all the cool toys and follow the big dogs around. There is so much for Stripe to see and do! Stripe is listed as a Lab mix so he will probably be a medium-to-large size dog when fully grown. He’s all black with white toes and a neat stripe down his belly. This playful puppy is already neutered and ready to get out and see what he’s been missing!  Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more info about Stripe!

GOOSE (A891818) is a little older than Stripe at about nine months old and just as playful. Goose is a real silly goose who also loves all the puppy things in life. She loves playing with other dogs and chasing tennis balls. Goose seems to like water too because she keeps trying to climb into the water bucket and splash around! Goose is also a black Lab mix who will be a good family dog or companion for an active adult. Come get silly Goose before her puppy time is up. Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more info.

He is so sweet it is just heartbreaking to see him look at you through the bars of his kennel with those soulful eyes just saying are you coming for me?

Contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com if you can help.

Beethoven (A892414) is Field Spaniel/Rotweiler mix about 2 years old.  He is a very sweet boy!  He loves people and other dogs.  He also LOVES to be brushed; he will sit, lie, stand forever if you will brush him. His fur is so fluffy and beautiful and he knows it!  Beethoven only has 3 weeks left at the shelter.   He is so sweet and loving and will make a wonderful family pet for someone.  He’s been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.  If you are interested in Beethoven, contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com.

Finally, we have a special plea for beautiful Cleo.   Sadly, Cleo’s former owners did not take care of him and he ended up at BARC with a case of heartworms.  This is very treatable but we need to raise some funds to pay for the heartworm treatment.   If you can spare a few dollars, please consider making a donation to help pay for his treatment.  You can pay online via paypal by going to www.friendsofbarc.org and click on donate.   Put in the notes section, “For Cleo’s heartworm treatment”, or contact Carla at 713-444-3012 if you would prefer to send a check (or if you are interested in adopting Cleo).  Thank you so much for helping save this sweet boy!

The adoption fee is only $55 for any of these dogs and includes:   surgery for spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, Home Again Microchip and 1 year city license.  What a deal for a lifelong friend!!

BARC STARZ 8-20-08

August 22, 2008

Hello BARC STARZ Readers!  We’ve got lots of great dogs for you this week!   And if you are looking for a smaller sized dog, we’ve got several this time….see below!

HONEY IS AN AWESOME SWEET LITTLE TERRIER GIRL!   She is about 20 pounds and is almost full grown at 10 months old.  She is very smart and knows basic commands.  She is HW neg, current on all her shots, spayed and would make someone a lovely companion.  She still has a lot of puppy in her.  She is house and crate trained and good with other dogs of all sizes.  She runs and plays with my big dogs. If interested, please contact Carla at 713-444-3012.

Say hello to Jada!   She is about 6 months old, spayed female, boxer/border collie mix 35-40 lbs..  Crate trained, sweet, SMART, highly trainable, fun, loves everyone & everything!

She is at the shelter and her ID number is #A895610.  For more information, contact Joanie at 832-724-6508 or bigdogsgrooming@gmail.com

Meet sweet Kara!  She is a 2 year old terrier mix that weighs about 20 lbs and loves to play.  She is good with kids, cats and other dogs and just has the most bubbly personality.  Kara has been waiting a long time to find her forever home but it never brings her down.  She just loves everyone and can’t wait till the day when she finds a family that loves her back.  To learn more about her, please email elimedwick@yahoo.com

Sweet Cleo needs a home!!  She is a German Shepherd 3-4 year old beautiful girl.  She is so sweet and starved for attention.  She gets along with other dogs and is house and crate trained.  She is a wonderful girl that is looking for her forever home.  She was pulled from BARC when it was evacuating for the hurricane but now she really needs to find herself a home.  If interested, please contact Carla at 713-444-3012.

Naomi is a beautiful Pointer mix female, between 1 and 2 years old. She is extremely sweet and loving and enjoys nothing more than being around people. She is playful and energetic and would love to be in a home where she can get plenty of exercise. She is house broken and crate trained and ready to go to her new family. Contact Fran for more info at foyle67@hotmail.com.

Okay, these pictures do not do her justice…..you’ve got to meet Patti!   Patti is a corgi/aussie mix. She weighs about 30-35 pds and is about 2-3 yrs old. She is housebroken and dog door trained. Patti was very sick upon entering foster care and almost died 2x. It has taken almost 6 months to get her health completely back. Patti is heartworm negative and on heartgard.
Although Patti is a unique looking dog her personality makes up for it. She LOVES kids of all ages.  Her tail never stops wagging when new people come around.
Patti has had plenty of time to think about her dream home. She especially loves older children (boys who play ball get an extra kiss). She loves to chase cats so no cats for her. Patti will not share food, but loves to play tug of war with kids or other dogs and will share her toys willingly.  She gets along with dogs small or big. She does not like crates, but because she is housebroken can be out and will not chew up the furniture.   Patti deserves a furever home that will spoil her, since her start in life was not that great!!! Contact Kelli for more info at mybassetiscute@yahoo.com

Mabel came to BARC with a litter of 8 puppies!  Now that they are all adopted she has come out of her shell and she is a SPUNKY dog who loves to play in the sprinkler!  She also enjoys rough housing with her foster dog siblings.  Once tired out she will sit on the couch and fall asleep with her head in your lap.  Our best guess is that she is a Jack Russell Terrier/Corgi mix.  She is about a year old, heartworm negative, crate trained, house trained, not food aggressive and an all around sweet dog.  Mabel would do well in a home with another dog about her size (20lbs.) to play with.  Contact Julie for more info at juliekeeton5@aol.com

This little cutie is Hillary, a small dog that weighs approx.15 lbs.  She is a chihuahua mix, about 3 yrs old and is heartworm negative. She is good with kids and cats. She is housebroken, crate and dog door trained. She loves to sleep under the covers at the bottom of the bed. Hillary tends to be a little possessive of her owner with other dogs. She also will not share her toys. Hillary’s dream home is with older children (which she loves) and to be the only dog or with only one other. Oh and she loves the car!!! Contact Kelli at mybassetiscute@yahoo.com  for more information!

Some of you may remember Penny as “Peter” from a few months agoUnfortunately, he is still looking for his forever home.   He must be adopted or fostered by Sept. 18th or he will have to go back to BARC!!  Please help!!!!   Peter is about 15 months old, neutered male, 32 lbs, reddish brown beagle / lab (?) mix.  He has very short hair – so little to no shedding.   He just went to doggy train and board – so he knows ‘come, leave it, drop it, sit, down, and stay.’  Sometimes he interprets the commands as merely a suggestion – but they are in his brain and he should continue to improve if you practice with him.   Penny is the perfect medium dog – okay for an apartment with lots of youthful energy.  He loves to run and play.  He’s a bit mischevious and will get into trouble if you don’t watch him.  He’s a bit like a two year old – lots of things go into his mouth.  He is potty trained and crate trained.  His crate will come with him when adopted – he sleeps there at night and stays in his crate while I am at work.   He loves to run and smell everything (that’s the beagle part).   He loves to chew bones – buy lots of those and skip the toys because he eats them immediately.   I have a cat and Penny considers him as one of his toys and keeps trying to eat him.  I would not recommend a house with a cat.  If you are interested in Penny, contact Kat at ekatarina77@yahoo.com.

Puppy STARZ 8-13-08

August 14, 2008

Dear BARC STARZ Readers,

We’re back!!   We apologize for missing last week…..lets blame it on Eduardo and leave it at that!   Seriously, we want to send a special thank you to all of you who came out to foster dogs and cats just “in case” we had a flooding situation.  We so appreciate your continued support and concern for the animals.  If you are new to this email list, this is our weekly email blast with animals available for adoption from the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) in Houston, TX.  Welcome and please, spread the word!

IT’S RAINING PUPPIES!   This week, we are diverging a bit from our original format to feature some of the MANY adorable puppies in our foster home system currently available for adoption.   Certainly, these pups would not be alive today if it were not for the dedicated care of our many wonderful foster parents, who took them from the shelter at only a few days or weeks old and cared for them in their homes to get them ready for adoption.  It’s a true labor of love for them…but just look at the beautiful results!   WARNING:   the contents of this email may be too cute for some to handle!  But please look anyways and forward to others.  Every puppy that gets adopted opens up a new foster space for another puppy, so its like saving two lives at once!   If you are interested in becoming a foster parent and helping future puppies like these, contact Julie at juliekeeton5@aol.com.

Email the contact for each puppy to find out more information on date of availability, temperament, etc. and to set up a meeting.   An approved adoption application is required and the adoption fee of $60 which includes vaccinations, surgery for spay/neuter, and microchipping.

Contact Fran at foyle67@hotmail.com

Sawyer:

Beautiful, 7 month old, golden, green-eyed Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.  He is going to be around 60-70 lbs full grown.  He is very lean and graceful, and the absolute sweetest dog that ever lived!  He loves to roll over and have his belly rubbed and he will gently paw at you until you do it.  He is a calm little guy.  He has been in the same foster home since he came to BARC.  He is very healthy, fully vetted and ready to do to his forever home!

Contact Connie at wilhite_ck@msn.com

Princess:

Beautiful chocolate-colored, 7 month old Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.  She is one of Sawyer’s litter mates and is just as sweet as he is, although she tends to bond very closely with one person.  She is smaller than Sawyer (she was the runt of the litter) and will probably be only 40-50 lbs. full grown.  She is such a special girl and needs a special home where she will be spoiled silly!  Contact Connie at wilhite_ck@msn.com

Henry and Pistol:

As of Aug. 9, they are 11 weeks old.

Both are males.

Mother is a medium-sized black and white dog, 36 lbs. No discernible breed. Dad was a traveling man.

Pistol is, as his name suggests, full of vim and vigor. He’s always been twice as big as Henry, who is the quieter, more

introspective type. Both are sweet (love for you to pick them up and cuddle them). They are playful little guys.

No need to adjust your computer screen…you read it right!  We have a litter of 6 schnauzer mix puppies.   I know, they don’t look like schnauzers but we can assure that the mom was a schnauzer!  The daddy….well, we have no idea but the pups are absolutely gorgeous.  They are 4 weeks old now and should be ready very soon.  The pictures make them look bigger than they are..the pups are actually between 1-3 pounds each.   If you are interested, contact Julie at juliekeeton5@aol.com.

Tabitha, Tasha, Tina, Timmy, Tod

These 5 are lab mix litter mates. They are currently 8 weeks old and will be ready for adoption soon. They are playful, happy puppies that love attention and toys. They will probably be 40lbs or more when full grown.

BARC STARZ Dogs 7-30-08

August 1, 2008

Dear BARC STARZ Readers… Meet our dogs of the week!!

Here’s a face you can’t help but love….meet Elle, A896251.  A sweet but sad young lady dropped off Elle at BARC Saturday. She had hoped to adopt her but her other dog refused to accept Elle. So, sobbing, she returned Elle to BARC hoping she’d find a better home. Elle is a very sweet brindle girl, about 4 months old. She will probably grow to be a medium to large size dog. Her foster said Elle was doing very well in training and almost housebroken. Elle is in a puppy cage all alone at BARC now missing her nice warm house and people to cuddle. If you would like to give this puppy another chance email Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more information

Here’s a better look at little Bugsy!   Bugsy is barely 20 pounds and probably full-grown although she maintains her puppy playfulness. Bugsy’s been at BARC since May–hard to believe because she looks like a Pug mix! If you’re looking for a fun small dog with lots of energy Bugsy’s your gal! Email Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more about Bugsy.

Dewey is a fun-loving puppy who adores attention! After being adopted out when he was three months old, he was returned to Friends of BARC three months later when his former owners found out they were pregnant. For all Dewey’s rough past, he is amazingly outgoing and wants nothing more than for you to play fetch with him. He loves everyone and everything! His fosters have yet to introduce him to cats, but after some serious playtime at the dog park and some stolen hearts, he is completely at ease with other dogs and is not afraid to jump into your lap.
Still ever the puppy, Dewey is still learning some of his basic commands. He has learned “sit” and is working on “come.” He is house-broken and crate-trained although he has free roam at his foster home. Dewey is currently free-fed and is more than happy to share food and toys with his fellow pack mates. He very much enjoys toys, especially rope-toys since they are much easier to play tug o’ war with!   Email Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com for more information about adopting Dewey!

Meet Hawk (A888357) & Harley (A888372)!  These 2 shepherd/retriever mix pups were brought into the shelter back in May and amazingly they still have not been adopted!  They are now almost 5 months old and absolutely gorgeous dogs who need loving homes of their own!  Their time is up on August 11th.  Can anyone save them by then??  These pups have been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.  Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net if you are interested.

Harley

Now this really is a “prince” of a guy!  Prince is listed as an afghan hound mix but we think he’s probably more of a collie mix.  Either way, he’s a gorgeous boy..this picture does not do him justice!   He was turned in a couple weeks ago already neutered.  He’s about 60 lbs, 3 years old and absolutely stunning..you must come meet him in person!  Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net for more information!

Hi I’m Merle!   Yes, that’s not the most imaginative name because of my blue merle coloring, feel free to change it when you take me home!  I’m very scared at the shelter.   But I would not hurt a fly, I’m submissive and sweet.  The volunteers think I am a Catahoula/Australian shepherd mix.  I definitely have some Catahoula with the one blue and one brown eye combo.  I’m a pretty big boy…70 lbs or so but I am a love bug.  Come meet me today!   (ID  A892271 )   Contact Kathy for more info at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

Meet sweet Godiva, A894309.   Godiva is a female chocolate lab mix puppy, only 4 months old.  She is pretty scared by herself at the shelter!   She is a very sweet little girl.   You can adopt her by fostering her until she’s ready to be spayed and formally adopted.  Email Kathy for more info at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

BARC Starz–7-23-08

July 25, 2008

Hello BARC STARZ Readers!   First we’ve got a few updates for you from last week.  Thanks to 2 great fosters for coming forward for Bertie and Sammy!  They are both still available for adoption so feel free to email us if you were interested!  Thanks to all of you who sent contributions for Beauty and a special thank you to everyone who offered to help Dynamite.  We are excited that he is now “Peyton” and living in his new home!   This is all due to you, great readers, reading and forwarding every week.   We love ya for it!

We are also excited to report that BARC STARZ is on the web!   Thanks to a very good friend of Friends of BARC and BARC (Jenni Rebecca Stephenson), we now have a blog at www.barcstarz.wordpress.com and www.twitter.com/BARCStarz.  Please check these blogs for updates during the week!  We also are set up in in FaceBook.   If you have a FaceBook account, search for the group Friends of BARC and join up!  And if you are not a FaceBook member yet, its easy (and free!) to create an account.

Our 90 day dog of the week is Goldilocks (A885826).  We are all so surprised she has made it to this spot without being adopted, since she’s one of the sweetest, prettiest girls we know!   Goldie is a lab/shepherd/oh-heck-we-don’t-know-what mix but she’s very sweet & gentle, about 50 lbs full grown.   She’s about 2 years old, heartworm negative, spayed and up to date on her vaccines.   She gets along well with other dogs and all the people we’ve seen!   She’s not especially hyper but she’d love a good walk with you…then a snuggle on the couch will be just fine.   Her 90 days are up at the end of this month.  If you can help adopt or foster Goldilocks, please contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

Elizabeth had a hard time getting Miss Bugsy to stand still for a picture. Bugsy was so happy to get outside in the warm sunshine and soft grass! She was running super-fast in big circles, sneaking up every few rounds to give Elizabeth a quick kiss. The only time she stopped was for a belly rub. Bugsy is spayed and ready to adopt in A Ward, as of Tuesday night. And she’s heartworm negative!

Meet sweet Charlie!  He is so sweet and just wants to be loved, 100% house trained and so well behaved, He is 3yrs old. – He is awaiting his HW treatment in a few weeks after he is done his meds for a minor resp infection. I love this sweet boy!   Contact Amanda at 832-724-8406 or chioabj@yahoo.com for more information!

Cricket has come a long way from getting bailed out of BARC as a mom with her pups! She’s now a delightful indoor companion with nice manners and she’s a sweet, laid back kinda gal. She’s friendly and affectionate and really wants to be your buddy. She likes both men and women equally as well, so she’s fine in a home with either or both. She’s not high energy, so she’s good with a morning walk, then she’s happy to nap while you’re at work. She’s not destructive, doesn’t require crating and she’s housetrained. She’s happy to smile and follow you around the house when you get home from work then chill out and watch some t.v.

Cricket’s foster mom has been working on her basic obedience and she’s doing very well. If you are interested in a forever companion well on her way to good manners, then Cricket might be the girl for you!  She’s been treated for heartworms and now on preventative, she’s current on her vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. Please visit http://www.adoptapointer.com for additional information and photos of Cricket and contact her foster mom at marygoldsby@earthlink.net for more information.

Joplin is a 6 month old Basset.  She is a cuddler that just adores people, any people, she loves them all!  She gets along with cats and will play with any dog she meets.  She is true to her breed and will follow her nose but is just a love bug.  If you want to know more about her, please email her foster mom at elimedwick@yahoo.com

Dewey is a wonderful Red Doberman mix puppy about 6 months old.  Poor Dewey went through so much in his early days and was very sick as a young pup—but look at him now!  He’s turned into a beautiful boy who is ready for his forever home.  He was in foster care for a while but is now at BARC ready to go home with YOU!  Contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com for more information about Dewey!

Here’s sweet Sadie!   Sadie is a little female terrier who weighs in at exactly 19.5 lbs full grown.  The vets estimate she’s about 2 years old and full grown.  She very gentle and smart and walks great on a leash.  She was a good momma to two little pups who have been adopted and now she’s ready for a new family of her own!   She is house trained, playful, very smart, quiet (since she is a terrier mix, some terriers are yappy, yet she is very quiet).  She loves to jog or walk and would be a great jogging companion.  She loves other dogs and adults as well as children.   (However, she likes to chase cats…so we probably would not recommend her to a home with cats.)  She’s been fully vaccinated, spayed and is heartworm negative.  For more information about adopting Sadie, email  ejbilbrey@yahoo.com.

Meet Metro!  He has a special story to tell.  A kind volunteer found him at the Metro Rail on way to work.   She turned him in, but could not stop worrying about him…so, with a little teamwork we’ve got him in a safe spot but what he really needs is a new home of his own!   Kennel life is no place for a young pup!   Metro is gentle and sweet and would be a great family dog.   He is good with kids and other dogs and VERY calm for a young pup!  He’s been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.  All he needs now is a home of his own!   If you are interested in learning more about Metro, contact Lori at 832.623.3432 (cell), 713.758.2991 (wk), lclancy@velaw.com and lalaclancy@gmail.com.

Friends – This is a very special urgent plea for our sweet Jewels.  Jewels was found as a stray last June and turned into BARC where she waited 90 long days to be adopted…her day never came.  She has since been in the Scout’s Honor adoption program and we are DESPERATE FOR a foster home for her.  She is craving stability and a home.  Please consider fostering Jewels and please send to anyone that you think might consider adopting her!  We want to enroll Jewels in an obedience class but she needs a foster who can work with her.  She’s a wonderful doggie who just needs a chance…

Meet our GORGEOUS and FABULOUS Jewels!  This sweet girl is definitely a one of kind and a true gem of a doggie, a real jewel for sure!!  Jewels was rescued from the City of Houston pound (BARC) where she spent 3 very long months!!  She was out of time…when she finally made it into Scout’s Honor’s Adoption Program!  She is now safe and sound but wants nothing more than a home of her very own!!

Jewels is a wonderful doggie!  She loves, loves to play!!!  She also loves to sit on the couch and watch  baseball or your favorite sports.

Jewels wants nothing more than a person to love her and yard to romp and play in….its takes practice to keep those fabulous catching skills in.  She loves other doggies, although she does play pretty hard so would probably do best with dogs more her size, and is also totally house trained and crate trained too!!!   Also, because she is plays so hard, she will do best with older children.  Jewels would be a perfect for dog for an active couple or single person. Jewels would make a wonderful running or walking buddy and would be the perfect dog to take to the park or the lake!

Jewels loves nothing more than for you to rub her little pink belly!!  Jewels is VERY affectionate and loves to be loved on.  She is a very smart doggie too and learns very quickly.  She is just a big love bug waiting for her forever family to come along!

Jewels has the prettiest eyes you’ve ever seen and has a stunning white coat with very unique markings too. We think Jewels is a Staffordshire terrier mix!  Very unique and definitely a one of a kind!!!

PLEASE CONSIDER OPENING YOUR HOME TO JEWELS!!  She is spayed, up to date on all of her shots and also microchipped too!! Don’t wait to have this wonderful girl join your team!!!. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Jewels, please contact Cindy at cperini@velaw.com or 832-651-4512 or at 575-484-3148..

BARC Starz 7/16/08

July 17, 2008

To our dear BARC STARZ Readers who tell us, “I forward your emails every week,” we want to say “THANK YOU!”  It is working.   They say we can’t save them all.  I guess not, but we know we can save more of them than we have before!  And for that, we thank you again and again.    Congratulations to Nero (who is now “Courage”) on his wonderful home and thanks to the special person for coming forward to adopt him! We wish we did not have more 90 day dogs to show you, but sadly we have two this week.   And, of course, a host of other cuties so let’s get the ball rolling…

First, meet Bertie A886566, a male black lab mix. Bertie is almost a year old and on the small side for a lab mix, at about 40 lbs. full grown.    He’s spent 3 long months of his short life at BARC and, like so many black dogs we’ve profiled here, he just gets passed over time and time again.  Today Bertie makes his last plea, “Pick me, pick me!  Don’t I stand out beautifully against the green grass!  I’m very sweet and like other doggies.  I really need a place to run and play.  Being cooped up in a cage is enough to make a pup go nuts!”  Bertie has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.   Its Bertie’s last week at BARC.  Please email Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net if you can help Bertie.

Our 2nd 90 day dog is Sammy A883830. Yes, Sammy is a pit bull mix but wait!  Don’t be afraid!  Keep reading!!!   Sammy is super sweet and loves humans and other dogs.  He’s about 45 pounds full grown and about 1 year old.  He is a beautiful boy with a great personality to boot.   He’s been passed over time and again, can anyone help Sammy?  He’s been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.  This is his last week, PLEASE help! Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net if you can help.

We showed you Beauty a couple weeks ago, but you could not get a good look behind the bars.   But now…we know you will stand and take notice!   Beauty is a striking dog who is super sweet to boot!   She was very sad and depressed at BARC, but luckily a kind foster has taken her under her wing and now she’s doing great!   Her foster mom reports that Beauty is blossoming in her new foster home and is just one of those girls who is eager to please.   She’s just a big lover and one of those dogs you love to hug!   Sadly, Beauty has a case of heartworms that need to be treated.   This is a VERY TREATABLE condition (costs about $200 for a big dog) and we are accepting donations towards her treatment.  To make a donation, or if you are interested in adoption, email  kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

We are proud to offer a few of the lovely pit bulls that come into BARC a chance at new homes through the “Pit Pals” program.

Meet Luna, one of our latest pit pals that we have all absolutely fallen for! Luna  -loves people–very much!! (maybe too much) and can win over the harshest of critic.   However, she’s a little particular with other dogs, and probably would be best in an only-dog home.   Luna has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.  To learn more about this beautiful girl, email Fran at foyle67@hotmail.com.

Toby A866555 is a cute little brindle female chihuahua mix. She’s about 20lbs so a little big for a chi, but definitely has a chi head.   We really love this dog–she can be a little shy at first but when she realizes you’re okay she’s your best friend for life! She’s really playful, does well with all other dogs I’ve put her with and is super sweet and loving. She was an adoption return and is so sad at BARC all on her own. And she is a girl (despite the name!) and has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.  To learn more about Toby, email Fran at foyle67@hotmail.com.

Email Fran for more info at foyle67@hotmail.com.

This is Naomi, a pointer whose tail never stops wagging. She is a total sweetheart despite the fact that she’s had kind of a rough time. She’s loving but not pushy and doesn’t jump up, but she is very nervous outside her home environment and needs some TLC to help her feel better about the outside world. She needs a family that will work to help give her confidence so she can start enjoying life like a dog should! Whoever is lucky enough to adopt her will have a wonderful, loving, loyal companion.   Email Fran for more info at foyle67@hotmail.com.

(However, she likes to chase cats…so we probably would not recommend her to a home with cats.)  She’s been fully vaccinated and is heartworm negative.

If you are interested in learning more about Metro, contact Lori at 832.623.3432 (cell), 713.758.2991 (wk), lclancy@velaw.com and lalaclancy@gmail.com.

You’ll receive unconditional love from Melbourne (Mel) an Australian Cattle Dog/heeler. He’s an extremely affectionate boy. He likes other dogs but absolutely loves his people. Mel recently completed heartworm treatment and he is as good as new! He’s 2-3 years old, weights about 50 lbs. and he’s neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. He’s pretty good and leash and is learning basic commands–and he gets better every week. Find out more about Mel and see more photos at Mel’s web site: http://www.adoptthatdog.com/. If you’d like to know more about Mel, contact his foster mom at flettch@gmail.com.

There are 4 puppies left for adoption from Mayple’s litter, which was featured last week.   These babies are terrier/poodle mixes who will be about 15 lbs. full grown. The first pup is a female and the other 3 are males.  They are too cute for words and only 7 weeks old.  Hurry and email Kathy about adopting one today!  kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net

Almond Joy, CeeCee (CookiesNCream), M&M, Snickers (I’m the runt but I’ve got attitude!)

Finally, we have a sad plea for Dynamite, a lovely male black lab (A890304). Dynamite is one of those dogs that is not tolerating the shelter environment well.   He has only been in month but is already starting to become cage crazy.   He is too strong for most of our female dog walking volunteers to take him out and it is near impossible to get him back in his cage.   He needs a trainer or an experienced dog owner to work with him.  He’s young, strong and too smart.   We need to find someone to work with him by this week or he’ll have to be euthanized.  It’s a sad decision to make, but for Dynamite, shelter life is just making him crazy and we can’t stand seeing him like that.   If you think you can help this boy, please email Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

Email the contact of each photo to determine their location (some of these animals are in foster care and some are at the shelter).  BARC is located at:
