BARC STARZ 9-10-08
September 11, 2008
Dear faithful BARC STARZ readers,
Thanks for coming through for us AGAIN! We are narrowing down the 90 day dog list for the month…and its all because of you! If you are keeping score from last week, Zoe and Velvet were adopted, and Deputy, Lolly Pop, Ruby, Goose and Beethoven are in foster homes! If you are interested in adopting one of those dogs from last week (pictures are attached) please emamil kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net and she can get you in touch with the foster mom or dad. We still have 4 dogs left we need to place by the end of the month: Alex, JoJo, Rusty and Stripe. Can you help one of them?? Email us today if you can! We are running out of time! There also are some adorable foster puppies ready for adoption this month….take a look!
Alex is a true gentleman. He is a two year old Lab mix with the most unusual coat…he glistens bronze in the sunlight. Alex is a very smart boy, he really listens and will look at you trying to understand what you are saying. He will talk to you too. Alex is great with other dogs. He has been at BARC since April. He came in with tags and with his buddy, when his owners were called they said they would come and get him so Alex sat for days waiting and they never came. When they were called again they said they were traveling to a wedding and didn’t have time to come for him. Alex was adopted briefly in August and returned; the adopters wrote that he is a great dog and just wonderful with kids. They returned him because they were keeping him in the back yardL and he could jump their 4 foot fence. Alex wants to be part of a family. He is so sweet it is just heartbreaking to see him look at you through the bars of his kennel with those soulful eyes just saying are you coming for me?
Contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com if you can help.
Sadly, JoJo was adopted as a little pup and returned to the shelter when he got big (as if we don’t all grow up!) Jo Jo is an adorable, spunky, happy fellow. He is approximately 10 months old Lab mix. He is approximately 35lbs, not too big, not too small. Since his return Jo Jo has spent nearly 3 months at BARC. Jo Jo loves to run and play with other dogs. He is a cuddler and a does the “Jo Jo lean” when you pet him. He is a bright, attentive, intelligent guy. He has spent most of his short life at BARC after being dumped by his family. He LOVES the water…he sticks his whole head in the water bucket. He loves to play ball and he loves to play with other dogs. He would love to go jogging or power walking. He has a lot of personality. He is sweetheart who just wants a family who will play with him. His time is up on Sept. 27th. Contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com.

RUSTY (A892256) is your All American Dog. He’s the kind of dog who will be waiting for you anxiously when you get home, falling all over himself with joy every time. Rusty’s kind of a medium-to-large dog who’s full grown at just over a year old. He loves to play and is very clownish so he’d probably be great with kids or as a buddy for another dog with his energy level. Come on, how can you resist that face? He only has 3 more weeks left at the shelter. Please come meet him and fall in love! Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com

STRIPE (A892354) is barely six months old and doesn’t know all the great puppy stuff he’s been missing. He was so excited to go outside and play with all the cool toys and follow the big dogs around. There is so much for Stripe to see and do! Stripe is listed as a Lab mix so he will probably be a medium-to-large size dog when fully grown. He’s all black with white toes and a neat stripe down his belly. This playful puppy is already neutered and ready to get out and see what he’s been missing! Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more info about Stripe!

Every volunteer has a dog they think is special and Elizabeth feels that way about Chelsea. This poor girl was dumped at the pound by her owner and is so depressed and scared. Her age is estimated at seven. Can you imagine your owner getting rid of you after all those good years? Chelsea is heartworm negative and has had all her shots. She’s a very gentle and quiet dog who will rest her head against you in a way that really touches your heart. Older dogs don’t usually get a chance at BARC so if you can foster this sweet girl and give her back her confidence please email Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com.

Hi my name is “Little Man” !! I am a 4 month old German Sheperd male who loves to give kisses and I am totally a lap dog, even though I’ve outgrown my foster’s lap! I have plenty of room “to grow” as you can see by my ears and my huge feet and I love to throw bones in the air and play catch. I’ve had all my shots & I’ve been neutered and microchipped. I get along well with kids, other dogs and even cats………just waiting for that perfect family to take me home! Contact Judy at jjsjewels@sbcglobal.net

Tabitha is a black and white 3 month old border collie mix. She is very playful and loves the water. Tabitha will make a great companion for an active owner. She will probably be about 50lbs full grown. Contact Fran at franfoyle67@comcast.net if you are interested!

Timmy is a black 3 month old lab mix. He is cuddly and playful and loves to sit in your lap. This sweet natured boy will make someone a great buddy. He will probably be about 50lbs full grown. Contact Fran at franfoyle67@comcast.net if you are interested!

Meet Marshal and Dillon! These little guys are adorable 3 month old lab mixes that just have more love to give than you can imagine! They are well behaved young cowboys that are crate trained and good with other dogs and cats. They adore a challenge and just really want to be held and loved on. They had a rough start to life, but are living the high life right now and are now ready for their forever homes! If you want to know more about these guys, please email their foster mom at elimedwick@yahoo.com

The adoption fee is only $55 for any of these dogs and includes: surgery for spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, Home Again Microchip and 1 year city license. What a deal for a lifelong friend!!

Dear BARC STARZ Readers,
Thank you so much for your amazing response from last week! We are excited to report that Bella was saved by our friends at Scouts Honor Rescue! Thank you! Mandy was adopted and is sleeping happily in her new home. Haven is also safe and sound in a great foster home. J However…there are 3 dogs left from last week along with some new “last chance dogs.” 2 of these are very URGENT! Please keep reading!
We can’t believe we did not have any responses about VELVET (A892273) who was featured last week! We are telling you, this is a gem of a dog! There are so many black dogs at BARC it’s easy for them to get overlooked. Please don’t let that happen to this wonderful dog! Velvet is unusual in that he has a very lean build with glossy fur that really shows off his muscles. He has a very regal disposition but any time he gets close to you he will drop and beg you to rub his belly! Velvet is shy and quiet, good with other dogs, and one of the most easy-going and gentle guys currently at BARC. Come see Velvet in person and see how he got his name. The pictures don’t do him justice. If you can help Velvet, contact Kathy at keffebach@sbcglobal.net.

This week we have an URGENT plea for DEPUTY (A889963)!! He has been at BARC since MAY and his time is up this week!! He needs a foster or adoptive home by Sunday, Sept. 6th. Deputy is a gentle giant who’s listed as a German Shepherd mix but has more of that hound dog look going for him. At just about a year old, Deputy’s still got some playful puppy energy. He is fine with other dogs, good on a leash and may be housebroken, too. This big guy is neutered and ready to go. All he needs is somebody who loves big dogs to give him a chance. Please, can you save Deputy??? Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net if you can help.

Our 2nd UPRGENT needs dog is ZOE (A890357). Her time is also up this week! Zoe needs an adopter or foster by Sunday, Sept. 6th! Poor Zoe is a little energy ball who just can’t be cooped up in the kennel any longer. She is just a sweet goof of a dog! She’s listed as a Beagle mix but she looks more heavy on the mix side. Zoe also loves to play and be silly. She has a funny bounce to her run when she chases tennis balls. Zoe is also about a year old, medium-to-large size, spayed and ready to go. Zoe will love a big yard and plenty of exercise. She’ll give you lots of sloppy dog kisses in return! Please help save Miss Zoe! She’ll love you forever. Contact Elizabeth if you can help at evitek@yahoo.com.

2nd plea for Lolly Pop A865751!!!! She is a beautiful female German Shepherd mix about 2 years old. She’s on the small side for a shepherd mix (about 45 lbs.) and as sweet as she can be. These pictures don’t do her justice…she really is a beautiful dog! Her time is up on Sept. 17th. Lolly Pop has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net.

2nd plea also for JoJo!!! Sadly, JoJo was adopted as a little pup and returned to the shelter when he got big (as if we don’t all grow up!) He is located in South B37. Jo Jo is an adorable, spunky, happy fellow.

RUBY (A892258) is also a big girl but is very laid back. Ruby’s listed as a Lab mix but she has beautiful red and brown brindle striping. At just over a year old she acts more settled like an older dog. She likes to play, though, and is fine with other dogs, but she’d rather snuggle up next to you for some hugs and kisses. Ruby is a very gentle and sweet girl looking for someone who can appreciate a really big lap dog. Ruby only had 3 more weeks left at the shelter! Adopt her today!!! Contact Kathy at kdeffebach@sbcglobal.net

Sadly, we have two puppies who have been at BARC for almost 90 days. Can you imagine spending your best time as a baby living in a cage at the pound watching all the other puppies get adopted but you? STRIPE (A892354) is barely six months old and doesn’t know all the great puppy stuff he’s been missing. He was so excited to go outside and play with all the cool toys and follow the big dogs around. There is so much for Stripe to see and do! Stripe is listed as a Lab mix so he will probably be a medium-to-large size dog when fully grown. He’s all black with white toes and a neat stripe down his belly. This playful puppy is already neutered and ready to get out and see what he’s been missing! Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more info about Stripe!

GOOSE (A891818) is a little older than Stripe at about nine months old and just as playful. Goose is a real silly goose who also loves all the puppy things in life. She loves playing with other dogs and chasing tennis balls. Goose seems to like water too because she keeps trying to climb into the water bucket and splash around! Goose is also a black Lab mix who will be a good family dog or companion for an active adult. Come get silly Goose before her puppy time is up. Contact Elizabeth at evitek@yahoo.com for more info.

Beethoven (A892414) is Field Spaniel/Rotweiler mix about 2 years old. He is a very sweet boy! He loves people and other dogs. He also LOVES to be brushed; he will sit, lie, stand forever if you will brush him. His fur is so fluffy and beautiful and he knows it! Beethoven only has 3 weeks left at the shelter. He is so sweet and loving and will make a wonderful family pet for someone. He’s been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested in Beethoven, contact Bonnie at bford@globalexponent.com.

Finally, we have a special plea for beautiful Cleo. Sadly, Cleo’s former owners did not take care of him and he ended up at BARC with a case of heartworms. This is very treatable but we need to raise some funds to pay for the heartworm treatment. If you can spare a few dollars, please consider making a donation to help pay for his treatment. You can pay online via paypal by going to www.friendsofbarc.org and click on donate. Put in the notes section, “For Cleo’s heartworm treatment”, or contact Carla at 713-444-3012 if you would prefer to send a check (or if you are interested in adopting Cleo). Thank you so much for helping save this sweet boy!

The adoption fee is only $55 for any of these dogs and includes: surgery for spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, Home Again Microchip and 1 year city license. What a deal for a lifelong friend!!

BARC STARZ 8-20-08
August 22, 2008
Hello BARC STARZ Readers! We’ve got lots of great dogs for you this week! And if you are looking for a smaller sized dog, we’ve got several this time….see below!
HONEY IS AN AWESOME SWEET LITTLE TERRIER GIRL! She is about 20 pounds and is almost full grown at 10 months old. She is very smart and knows basic commands. She is HW neg, current on all her shots, spayed and would make someone a lovely companion. She still has a lot of puppy in her. She is house and crate trained and good with other dogs of all sizes. She runs and plays with my big dogs. If interested, please contact Carla at 713-444-3012.

Say hello to Jada! She is about 6 months old, spayed female, boxer/border collie mix 35-40 lbs.. Crate trained, sweet, SMART, highly trainable, fun, loves everyone & everything!
She is at the shelter and her ID number is #A895610. For more information, contact Joanie at 832-724-6508 or bigdogsgrooming@gmail.com

Meet sweet Kara! She is a 2 year old terrier mix that weighs about 20 lbs and loves to play. She is good with kids, cats and other dogs and just has the most bubbly personality. Kara has been waiting a long time to find her forever home but it never brings her down. She just loves everyone and can’t wait till the day when she finds a family that loves her back. To learn more about her, please email elimedwick@yahoo.com

Sweet Cleo needs a home!! She is a German Shepherd 3-4 year old beautiful girl. She is so sweet and starved for attention. She gets along with other dogs and is house and crate trained. She is a wonderful girl that is looking for her forever home. She was pulled from BARC when it was evacuating for the hurricane but now she really needs to find herself a home. If interested, please contact Carla at 713-444-3012.

Naomi is a beautiful Pointer mix female, between 1 and 2 years old. She is extremely sweet and loving and enjoys nothing more than being around people. She is playful and energetic and would love to be in a home where she can get plenty of exercise. She is house broken and crate trained and ready to go to her new family. Contact Fran for more info at foyle67@hotmail.com.

Okay, these pictures do not do her justice…..you’ve got to meet Patti! Patti is a corgi/aussie mix. She weighs about 30-35 pds and is about 2-3 yrs old. She is housebroken and dog door trained. Patti was very sick upon entering foster care and almost died 2x. It has taken almost 6 months to get her health completely back. Patti is heartworm negative and on heartgard.
Although Patti is a unique looking dog her personality makes up for it. She LOVES kids of all ages. Her tail never stops wagging when new people come around.
Patti has had plenty of time to think about her dream home. She especially loves older children (boys who play ball get an extra kiss). She loves to chase cats so no cats for her. Patti will not share food, but loves to play tug of war with kids or other dogs and will share her toys willingly. She gets along with dogs small or big. She does not like crates, but because she is housebroken can be out and will not chew up the furniture. Patti deserves a furever home that will spoil her, since her start in life was not that great!!! Contact Kelli for more info at mybassetiscute@yahoo.com

Mabel came to BARC with a litter of 8 puppies! Now that they are all adopted she has come out of her shell and she is a SPUNKY dog who loves to play in the sprinkler! She also enjoys rough housing with her foster dog siblings. Once tired out she will sit on the couch and fall asleep with her head in your lap. Our best guess is that she is a Jack Russell Terrier/Corgi mix. She is about a year old, heartworm negative, crate trained, house trained, not food aggressive and an all around sweet dog. Mabel would do well in a home with another dog about her size (20lbs.) to play with. Contact Julie for more info at juliekeeton5@aol.com.

This little cutie is Hillary, a small dog that weighs approx.15 lbs. She is a chihuahua mix, about 3 yrs old and is heartworm negative. She is good with kids and cats. She is housebroken, crate and dog door trained. She loves to sleep under the covers at the bottom of the bed. Hillary tends to be a little possessive of her owner with other dogs. She also will not share her toys. Hillary’s dream home is with older children (which she loves) and to be the only dog or with only one other. Oh and she loves the car!!! Contact Kelli at mybassetiscute@yahoo.com for more information!

Some of you may remember Penny as “Peter” from a few months ago. Unfortunately, he is still looking for his forever home. He must be adopted or fostered by Sept. 18th or he will have to go back to BARC!! Please help!!!! Peter is about 15 months old, neutered male, 32 lbs, reddish brown beagle / lab (?) mix. He has very short hair – so little to no shedding. He just went to doggy train and board – so he knows ‘come, leave it, drop it, sit, down, and stay.’ Sometimes he interprets the commands as merely a suggestion – but they are in his brain and he should continue to improve if you practice with him. Penny is the perfect medium dog – okay for an apartment with lots of youthful energy. He loves to run and play. He’s a bit mischevious and will get into trouble if you don’t watch him. He’s a bit like a two year old – lots of things go into his mouth. He is potty trained and crate trained. His crate will come with him when adopted – he sleeps there at night and stays in his crate while I am at work. He loves to run and smell everything (that’s the beagle part). He loves to chew bones – buy lots of those and skip the toys because he eats them immediately. I have a cat and Penny considers him as one of his toys and keeps trying to eat him. I would not recommend a house with a cat. If you are interested in Penny, contact Kat at ekatarina77@yahoo.com.

Puppy STARZ 8-13-08
August 14, 2008
Dear BARC STARZ Readers,
We’re back!! We apologize for missing last week…..lets blame it on Eduardo and leave it at that! Seriously, we want to send a special thank you to all of you who came out to foster dogs and cats just “in case” we had a flooding situation. We so appreciate your continued support and concern for the animals. If you are new to this email list, this is our weekly email blast with animals available for adoption from the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) in Houston, TX. Welcome and please, spread the word!
IT’S RAINING PUPPIES! This week, we are diverging a bit from our original format to feature some of the MANY adorable puppies in our foster home system currently available for adoption. Certainly, these pups would not be alive today if it were not for the dedicated care of our many wonderful foster parents, who took them from the shelter at only a few days or weeks old and cared for them in their homes to get them ready for adoption. It’s a true labor of love for them…but just look at the beautiful results! WARNING: the contents of this email may be too cute for some to handle! But please look anyways and forward to others. Every puppy that gets adopted opens up a new foster space for another puppy, so its like saving two lives at once! If you are interested in becoming a foster parent and helping future puppies like these, contact Julie at juliekeeton5@aol.com.
Email the contact for each puppy to find out more information on date of availability, temperament, etc. and to set up a meeting. An approved adoption application is required and the adoption fee of $60 which includes vaccinations, surgery for spay/neuter, and microchipping.

Sawyer:
Beautiful, 7 month old, golden, green-eyed Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He is going to be around 60-70 lbs full grown. He is very lean and graceful, and the absolute sweetest dog that ever lived! He is very healthy, fully vetted and ready to do to his forever home!
Contact Connie at wilhite_ck@msn.com

Princess:
Beautiful chocolate-colored, 7 month old Lab/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. She is one of Sawyer’s litter mates and is just as sweet as he is, although she tends to bond very closely with one person. Both are males.
Mother is a medium-sized black and white dog, 36 lbs. No discernible breed. Dad was a traveling man.
Pistol is, as his name suggests, full of vim and vigor. He’s always been twice as big as Henry, who is the quieter, more
introspective type. Both are sweet (love for you to pick them up and cuddle them). They are playful little guys.

No need to adjust your computer screen…you read it right! We have a litter of 6 schnauzer mix puppies. I know, they don’t look like schnauzers but we can assure that the mom was a schnauzer! The daddy….well, we have no idea but the pups are absolutely gorgeous. They are 4 weeks old now and should be ready very soon. The pictures make them look bigger than they are..the pups are actually between 1-3 pounds each. If you are interested, contact Julie at juliekeeton5@aol.com.

Tabitha, Tasha, Tina, Timmy, Tod
These 5 are lab mix litter mates. They are currently 8 weeks old and will be ready for adoption soon. They are playful, happy puppies that love attention and toys. They will probably be 40lbs or more when full grown.
